Hamas announces release of US-Israeli captive amid talks for Gaza ceasefire

Since October 2023, Gaza has endured relentless Israeli military assaults, leading to widespread destruction and displacement. A total blockade has worsened humanitarian conditions, preventing access to basic necessities. International condemnation continues, but efforts to negotiate a ceasefire remain ongoing.

AhlulBayt News Agency:  The Palestinian resistance group Hamas has announced that it will release a US-Israeli captive, Edan Alexander, following direct negotiations with the United States aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas stated that Alexander’s release is part of broader efforts to end hostilities, reopen Gaza’s crossings, and allow humanitarian aid into the besieged territory.

Khalil al-Hayya, a senior Hamas official, confirmed that recent discussions with the US administration had led to the decision, emphasizing Hamas’ willingness to engage in intensive negotiations for a final agreement to halt the war and exchange prisoners. He also called for post-war Gaza to be managed by an independent body to ensure stability and reconstruction.

Meanwhile, a new study published in The Lancet suggests that the death toll in Gaza since October 2023 may be significantly higher than officially reported. Researchers estimate that between 77,000 and 109,000 Palestinians have been killed, a figure representing between 4% and 5% of Gaza’s pre-war population. The study analyzed hospital records, civilian death submissions, and social media reports to reach its conclusions.

The Gaza Health Ministry has reported 52,787 Palestinian fatalities, noting that many victims remain under rubble or in areas still targeted by Israeli forces. With relentless air and artillery strikes continuing, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis worsens, leaving 90% of its 2.1 million residents displaced, without access to shelter, food, clean water, or medical care.
